Thanks to Rachel for sending me a copy of this in return for an honest review and spot on the book tour.

It’s learning, but packed up in a fun story that young readers will love.

It has very basic illustrations (they were black and white in my e-copy but I’m not sure if they are in the finished physical copy too), but I think young children will like them and they help give context to the story itself.

I mean, some of the characters are wonderfully bizarre – a half shark half flamingo anyone? As a grown-up reader, I found them hard to settle with, but I think the reading age will really enjoy them. They’re madcap ideas and add to the whimsical, magical nature of the book.

The Amazon reading age says 6-10 and I’m a little conflicted. I think 10 might be a bit too old, but much younger and they won’t fully understand it. So I think it really depends on what your child specifically likes to read.

I read a lot of kids books, from picture books to YA. Some are definitely just children’s books and others can appeal to an older readership. This is firmly in the former. I enjoyed it, it was fun and it only took me about an hour to read. But it didn’t give me the depth I, as an older reader, was after. But it’s definitely a good story for the intended reading age.

It’s a simple story that carries some heavy topics and hopefully children will absorb some of those without realising, so lost in the fun. And I believe this is only the first book in a planned series.
