After a life-changing accident, Katie’s plan for Christmas is simple: rent a spectacular island house in the Lake District, gather the people she loves, and enjoy snowy walks, crackling fires and the promise of a fresh start.

What she doesn’t plan on? Her ex-boyfriend turning up.

Still reeling from their break-up, Katie isn’t sure whether seeing him again will bring closure or reopen old wounds. Especially when she finds herself drawn to Arlo, the handsome owner of the island house, who is keeping his heart carefully guarded.

As Christmas approaches, old feelings resurface and new sparks begin to fly. Katie must decide whether to give the past one more chance, or open her heart to a love she never expected.

Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin for the advanced copy of this title in return for an honest review.

I think this is book number eight of Phillipa’s books I’ve read and the majority have been Christmas ones.

There was one particular character I didn’t like at first, and that’s Ned, Katie’s ex-boyfriend. It was like he was trying to be all sugary sweet but for me he felt slimy and I was just waiting for him to do something that proved that opinion. And because of that I would have preferred less page time dedicated to him, but that’s just because I didn’t like him, not that his story wasn’t interesting. And if I’m being completely honest, he did grow on me by the end.

There’s a small cast of characters but it covers different ages – although most are of a similar age. But apart from the aforementioned ex-boyfriend, they were all wonderful. They all have their flaws and their histories and their own story but you can really see how each one has impacted upon Katie’s life.

Arlo was probably my favourite character and watching him and Katie’s friendship develop over the novel was lovely to read. Although I did want Katie to pick up a bit because she doesn’t stand up for herself much and is a bit timid, and I was almost shouting at her to notice Arlo right there because he sounded dreamy.

The idea of renting out a big house in the countryside for your friends and family to celebrate Christmas has always been one of my dreams. And whilst things aren’t 100% rosy in this book, it still felt like a beautiful thing.

I love the Lake District, it’s a stunning place and Phillipa has really captured its beauty. I’ve never been to the Lakes in winter, but this book has really made me want to go. The beauty she’s captured of the land and the snow just makes it more magical.

I am a Christmas gremlin 365 days of the year so I read festive books all year round. But I read this just as September came to an end; Strictly had started and it felt like the countdown was officially on. I would recommend it at any time but it will definitely be a good read to curl up with during a dark cold winter evening.

Whilst the story is finished and doesn’t warrant a sequel, there are some subplots I’d like to read more of so perhaps a festive short story is in order?

All We Want For Christmas is still probably my favourite of her books but this was a close match. I will always jump at the chance to read a Phillipa Ashley book because they always give me what I expect and what I want.

There’s love, family, friendship, community, hope, ambition, desire, joy, festivities, a handsome man or two, a slow-burning romance, and a gorgeous setting. But it still sits the right side of sickly sweet. She has included some difficult topics and themes to balance out the positivity, which makes it feel more real. Another five star read.
