Olive, Mable and Me is the new book from broadcaster Andrew Cotter and his now internet famous canine companions, Olive and Mable.

Olive and Mabel went viral on social media with their sporting contests during the COVID-19 lockdown, with Andrew Cotter’s unique commentary propelling the videos to over 40 million views.

Now Cotter shares stories of his adventures with his loveable (and occasionally exasperating) canine companions in this beautifully written, touching and laugh-out-loud funny new book.

Reading this, it felt like I was the only person who hadn’t heard of Andrew’s dog videos, so it’s no surprise I didn’t know he’d written a book about them. A friend leant me this book and it was a surprising little find. I knew of Andrew Cotter through the rugby, and I of course read the entire book in his voice, which added a certain amount of enjoyment.

Whilst I absolutely adore my little doggy and wouldn’t swap him for the world, I always thought I’d quite like a Labrador. But seeing as my dog hates all other dogs, I don’t see that happening any time soon. I also can’t see my Jack Russell being quite as willing to participate in everything that Olive and Mabel do. Unless it involves food. Then he’ll do anything.

Overall, I found it quite a nice little book. It was quite rambling at times, with sections I wasn’t necessarily interested in, but it was a nice read to dive into when your mind is busy. And it’s made me love my dog even more. I don’t know how I would have got through these lockdowns without him – although I get the idea he’s rather looking forward to me going back to work so he can have some peace and quiet.
