Nikki Ranson

I don’t run a blog as I don’t have time to with my full-time job as an Activity Co-Ordinator in a nursing home, but I’ve been reviewing books and posting about them on social media on and off for the past two years. I’m happily married to my best friend, I’m 40 years old and I have three teenagers and three cats.

Questions on Reviewing

What made you start a book blog and/or book review social media account?
I enjoy reading and began posting reviews on social media and tagging authors in my posts. This led to conversations with other book enthusiasts and discussions about books and recommendations. As a slow reader, my social media posts serve as a reading journal for me to revisit.

What have you learned about the writing and/or publishing industry since reviewing?
I have discovered a wealth of literature I was previously unaware of. After a decade of raising a family, which limited my reading time, I have rediscovered my passion for books. I now discover more authors through the diverse range of publishing companies in the industry.

Are there any authors or books you have discovered through reviewing that you might have otherwise missed out on?
Following the receipt of my first Advanced Reader Copy, I have since acquired several more and discovered new authors who have become my favourites. I eagerly anticipate their future work. These authors are Amber Leigh Larrain, Jodie Homer, Bettina Hunt, and Lauren Hope.

What do you think makes a great book review?
A great book review clearly explains what the book is about without giving away major spoilers, while also offering thoughtful analysis of elements like characters, themes, writing style, and structure. It includes specific examples to support opinions, stays balanced by recognising both strengths and weaknesses, and shares the reviewer’s personal response to the book. It also considers the book’s context – such as its genre, audience, or cultural significance – and ends with a clear overall impression or recommendation to help readers decide whether the book is right for them.

How do you handle reviewing a book you dislike?
I write the truth if I did not enjoy it, but always provide positive feedback and comments on the book cover.

Is there anything that puts you off reviewing a book or author?
If it is a genre I do not enjoy, I will not read it.
