Thanks to Head of Zeus for the advanced proof of this book in return for an honest review.

I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it do just about everyone. It is such an original idea and it’s been executed perfectly. It had this dark humour running through it that you’ll find yourself laughing, and then looking around to make sure no-one heard.

It contains present scenes and moments of flashback, which can be clunky if not handled correctly. But he’s managed to seamlessly fit the flashbacks in and make them natural to the flow of the story.

Not only is it funny and entertaining and a great piece of writing. It’s really clever to. He’s managed to take the familiar genres of romantic comedy, crime novel and murder mystery, and combine them so well that it feels completely new and fresh and yet recognisable.

I read it in one four hour sitting. I just couldn’t tear myself away. It’s absolutely brilliant. Full of twists and turns, red herrings, suspects, shocks and spills, and keeps you absorbed right to the very end.

If you’re like me, I was in the dark right to the reveal, which for me, is what makes a good mystery. Every time I thought I’d come to an answer, the rug would be pulled out from under me and I’d be back to square one, putting the clues together at the same time as the characters.

I didn’t think I’d like the main character of Gwen at first, for no real reason in particular, but I absolutely loved her. She felt like she could be any one of us. She is the perfect main character, but supporting characters such as Charlie and Lyons, Sarah and Richard, they’re all great at supporting Gwen’s story and even manage to steal some scenes from her. There wasn’t a badly written character in my opinion, unless they’re meant to be a bad character, but even those were written with great aplomb (now there’s a world you don’t hear often).

It is so well written, so expertly crafted, and it’s his debut novel. If this is anything to go by, he’s going to be one very popular man. The reading just felt effortless, like reading the escapades of a friend. It felt familiar and cosy, regardless of the subject type. A real first rate read.
